New diversity chair, many sponsors make Pride better

by John Harrison,

Michael H. Flickinger and Brynna Fish

Cleveland-To help ensure an emphasis on diversity at this year's festival, Cleveland Pride, Inc. has added a diversity chair position to its committee. This year, the position is held by Christopher Coleman, the capacity-building educator for the Brother2Brother program of the AIDS Taskforce of Cleveland.

"I believe we always have to be cognizant of all the rich diverse cultures that make up our community," Coleman said. "I am glad to see that Pride has decided to step up to the plate and show how much they truly care about this issue by creating this position."

One area showing Pride's commitment to diversity is the Youth Zone, a youth-led, adult-sponsored activity which will focus on creating a safe space for youth to network and receive information about HIV, safer sex, and existing support services for youth. Activities at Youth Zone will include an exciting array of fun games, music and entertainment. There will be hourly sessions facilitated by peer educators from PRYSM, Club 1722 and the AIDS Taskforce on different topics including healthy dating skills and coming out support. Drinks, snacks and meals will be provided.

A diverse group of people and organizations help make Pride possible, including Cleveland Mayor Jane Campbell, Public Health Commissioner Matt Carroll and their staffs. From parade permits to security to licenses their assistance has been invaluable.

Ward 13 Councilmember Joe Cimperman has been a sponsor, speaker and has assisted Pride in working with the various boards and commissions. Pride also looks forward to working with Ward 17 Councilmember Matt Zone, who represents the Detroit-Shoreway neighborhood.

Cleveland Pride's sponsors also reflect the wide range of people in the community.

The Gay People's Chronicle is our longest continuous sponsor. In addition to their generous financial and advertising support, they also provide us storage and administrative facilities. From the early festivals on West 29th Street and Public Square to Voinovich Park, the Chronicle has always been there for Pride.

American Express Financial Advisers is our longest cash sponsor. In addition to being a corporate sponsor, financial adviser Tim Jenkins is Pride's former treasurer and board member.

Gold Sponsor Subaru of Mid America is back for their fifth consecutive year. Don't forget to browse those nice shiny cars along the main drag of Pride.

Two of Cleveland's most exciting clubs are sponsors. The Grid will host the Official Pre-Party on Friday June 14, starting at 10 p.m. Bounce will host the Official Post-Party on Saturday June 15 starting at 10 p.m. Pick up all your video and other needs at Pride sponsor West 9th Street Video.

NOCI, the Northern Ohio Coalition, will be at Pride promoting their "We Are Family" Festival, which will be held on Sunday August 25, the last Pride event of summer for northeast Ohio.

Real Estate Mortgage Corp. returns as a bronze sponsor. Tom Rankin and his team will be at Pride to answer all your mortgage questions and needs.

Other returning corporate sponsors include SBC Ameritech, the Plain Dealer and Clear Channel Entertainment.

Cleveland Pride's sponsors are certainly "Thinking Outside the Triangle" by supporting Pride and reaching out to our community. Please pay them a visit to help us thank them.

John Harrison is the youth coordinator for the Cleveland Lesbian-Gay Center, Michael H. Flickinger is the corporate chair for Cleveland Pride and Brynna Fish is Cleveland Pride's coordinator.
